I think we can all do more.
Thanks for making me think about it.

Philly,
We all know what the people coming acroos the border are coming here for and I dont blame them for wanting to escape that life. I dont feel that the Mexican people are at fault for the illegal immigration in this country I feel it is the Mexican Gov who is at fault. That doesnt change the fact that we have to uphold our immigration standards and our laws. It doesnt make America a bad place or Americans bad people to do so. Not everone can live hear and if we just let everyone in we are going to have a serious economic crisis on our hands.

Yes, I saw it and didn't like it, although I think many of my friends did. I thought the plot and characterization were rather poor (as plagues many films today) and I can do without the gratuitous gore (corpse) and infidelity (added nothing whatsover). It did give a nice picture of the border area (on both sides). I liked the scene with Levon Helm (the blind guy). I thought the border agent was unfairly portrayed. Yes, he made a mistake but the rest of the film was all about villainizing him and "paybacks"--the kind of things the anti-Mexican crowd specialize in doing. Why stoop to their level? An excellent documentary showing many different points of view on undocumented immigration is "Crossing Arizona" www.crossingaz.com/web_pages/synopsis.htmlAn even better one, showing the human face of immigration and U.S. -Central America relations (if it can be found) is "The Short Life of Jose Antonin Gutierrez"--about the first U.S. Marine killed in Iraq. (p.s. currently making the rounds in major cities-- www.theshortlife-film.com/en/film/)

If we had enforced the law from the start, then I would have no problem continuing to enforce it, but we did not do that. We accepted cut rate services from people that we knew were desperate, and now we have a moral obligation to those people who built their lives around our legal system's "don't look, don't see" policy. If we want to change the "don't look, don't see" policy and begin strict enforcement of the immigration laws, then we need to couple it with some amnesty.

My great grandparents immigrated from Italy and as the story has been passed down to me, they could not wait to learn English and start life in their new country. But this is because Italians are not lazy.
