I didn't want to spoil the "fun" forum with politics, so I thought I'd discuss the movie here.
I found the movie full of political overtones. What surprised me the most was that the views were not flaming liberal, as I would expect from Hollywood.
The main conflict is east vs. west , tyranny vs. freedom and (although they don't come out and say it) Islam vs. infidels.
Please go see it so we can discuss.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I got the same feeling from the trailers. Thermopale (sp) was a East vs West conflict (Greeks vs Persians) and it does resonate with todays East/West conflict between the West and Islam.

I don't buy that. Today's conflict is "you have oil and we want to control it".
The countries that have most of the oil just happen to be Muslim.
Islam is partially present in India and Saudi Arabia is fully Muslim. No conflicts there.

Iraq signed a contract to sell its oil only for euros in 2000. It got axed. Now, Iran signed a similar contract in 2003. Now, Iran is the main enemy.
In the 80s, insurgents in Afghanistan were America's allies and they were Muslim. Saddam was an ally in the 80s and Islam in Iraq back then presented no problems. Why all of a sudden Islam became a problem?

Big, If I understand you the hijackers slammed the planes into buildings because the Iraqis were selling oil in Euros? That makes no sense.

I didn't say it was exactly like todays conflict.
Symbolism??
Big, I think you should at least see the movie before you start disagreeing.

I am not disagreeing with what is in the movie. I am disagreeing with any kind of Islam vs. infidels reality conflict.
FWIW I don't even believe Evangelicals are truly after second coming phenomenon in Israel. That is just a cover up to control the oil. Evangelical Churches get their money, among all, from major oil magnates. They brainwash community so that the money can flow.

Big,
If your'e not disagreeing or discussing the movie, then don't post it here.
Your views on the current Middle East conflict have been documented quite well around here.
Let's try to keep at least one thread on this site on the intended topic.

My son just went to see this movie. I believe the producer made some comments regarding East vs West in a recent interview.

Iran has nothing to do with Sunni hijackers. Iran helped fight the Taliban and Al Qeada. What a coincidence, all of a sudden Iran is portrayed as the bad guy in the U.S. and they come out with a movie showing persians as the bad guys. Hmm......

Sigh...
Some of you really need to do a little research about the movie and what its based upon before commenting on it. This movie isn't a history book based account of the Battle of Thermopylae, and it damn sure isn't just some propaganda piece meant to stir up anti-Iranian sentiment. From what I understand Snyder shot this move almost completely faithful to Miller's graphic novel, which was published in 1998.
Not everything is meant to have a political bent behind it. This is a revolutionary movie in terms of film making techniques as well as a loose retelling of one of the greatest stories of all time.

But Shane, if that's all true, then how can Big and Satiev turn it against the US? I refuse to believe that there is something so pure that Big and Satiev can't use it to crap on the US. It's just impossible.
I'll bet that the director is a hard-core Zionist. That's gotta be it.

Artists use contemporary issues to inform their work all the time, for Gods sake the Invasion of the Body Snatchers was informed by "McCarthyism." It's hard to believe no one would use the current East/West conflict in the same way, that's what artists do.

This comic was created back in 1998, the "current" east west conflict was damn near nonexistant back then, and as I said Snyder shot the movie completely faithful to the comic.

First I loved the movie second the political tones I saw were in the struggle between a ruler and his congress for what comes down to power and a pissing contest. The corrupt individuals railing against those who want to do whats right. THe other political tone was freedom versus whoever opposes it, in this case the Persians. I thought it sent a great message as to how we should defend freedom to the last man.
On what Big is saying: Big if it wasnt for the western nations i.e. USA and Britian the midle east would never have been able to produce oil. Without us the Saudi Arabia, Iraq and IRan leaders would still be living in Tents and riding Camels instead of being billionaires. So if we wanted to control the oil we would have from the get go. When the Britians helped the Iranians or Iraqis produce the oil, they signed a contract to have free or discounted oil for so many years, America on the other hand did no such thing when we found and produced the oil in Saudi Arabia. So quite your bitching about the oil.
