I was just watching Lou Dobbs tonight on CNN. According to the national institue of literacy 40 million amerians are illiterate. That's 1 out of 5. I'm looking for the link.

If you don't have to learn the English language, it's difficult to learn nearly anything in school.
If you don't have parents that care about how well you do in school, you probably won't do very well.

That's the UN report buddy. I saw that link and I knew you were gonna post it. Unfortunately, the UN's defintion of illiterate is anyone not being able to read at all. Functional illiterate is what the report said.

You can still read and write and be illiterate. The UN'S defintion only applies to special ed students who are born mentally challenged.

Then go find the link you jackass. If you're going to say stupid things, its best to actually ATTEMPT to have some sort of verification behind them.

I'm guessing yes. If you live in this country, you should learn to read and write in english.

It's a major by-product of illegal immigration (so, we just have an "open boarders" policy and that will solve all our problems. )

Illiterate and not being proficient in English are two different things. If 40 million Americans are not proficient in English, then the statistic should read "40 million Americans are not proficient in English."

Satiev, what makes you think Lou Dobbs is credible about anything?
Since someone brought up immigration, you know literacy used to be a requirement to enter the U.S.--only their test was that the person be literate in *a* language, Italian, German whatever. You didn't have to know English and many didnt.
