Soviet Union fell apart when it was at its most friendly stage towards the West.
In other words, it did not fall apart while resisting the West but it fell apart by moving towards Western Principles. Soviet Union collapsed while signs on every corner had "Freedom of speech, Change" written on it.
I just think its a bit ironic that Soviet Union held together firmly while fighting with the West but collapsed when it decided to become friendly with it.

Garbochov tried to make it democratic and you can't do that while maintainng a communist society.

Interestingly though, Soviet Republics did not revolt just against Communism but against the Union itself since during Gorbachov's time it was alright to talk about Communist shortcomings and such.
However, simply restructuring Soviet Union's government system was not even a question.

For example, what is stopping Former Republics, say, from joining back together like states did in America a few hundred years ago?

Nothing. Though it wouldn't be in their best interest. Better to be working together like the EU does and maintain national soverignity, that way you have more pull at the UN.

Is pull at the UN really much more important than a country with Natural reserves 100 times to that of America?

Natural reserves, meaning "oil"?

Oil and g as are some of them. www.ems.psu.edu/~williams/russia.htmRussia contains over 30% of all the natural resources in the world. If repbublics that hate Russia like Georgia and Ukraine would respect Russia as a country then they would benefit greatly from them by allowing Russia to lower prices for natural resources during trade. But, because of their hatred towards Russia and their movement towards the west, and their cheap political games that blame russia for every little problem that exists in their country, life is getting worse for all the former soviet republics.

Russia has Gold, Silver and any other precious metals you can think of.
Other Republics also have a lot of oil, gas, trees, water, and precious metals.

Closed, totalitarian societies can not morph into a "somewhat free" culture and still maintain a totalitarian veneer. Russia couldn't do it, neither can China. The pressure of trade, of market forces, are so strong every knee will bend to them.

Just goes to show how some cultures aren't cut out for democratic society. Iraq is another example. It was better off as a dictatorship.

Brilliant redviking, brilliant! What is going on in Iraq is the same as if USA said no more Communism in Soviet Union but all the Republics still have to preserve the Union.
