Sidney Lowe, Son of Wolfpack Coach, Accused in Armed Robbery, Attempted Heist
Greensboro — The 21-year-old son of North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe faces charges in two armed incidents, including one in which a UNC-Greensboro student from Raleigh was shot in the back.
Police at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro said Sidney R. Lowe II surrendered to authorities Tuesday and was charged with eight counts, including felony aiding and abetting attempted armed robbery, in connection with Saturday's shooting and attempted robbery inside Weil Residence Hall.
"This is a difficult time for my son, myself and my family. We appreciate the support and understanding of the Wolfpack family," Lowe said in a statement.
Greensboro city police filed 14 additonal charges, including felony assault, in connection with a home invasion that took place on March 16. Lowe and another man are accused of going to a house with six people in it and striking one of them on the head with a bottle, said Lowe's attorney, Locke Clifford.
Investigators said a search warrant was served on the younger Lowe’s home on Monday in connection with Saturday’s shooting. Further investigation connected Lowe with additional criminal offenses not related to the shooting and attempted robbery at UNC-G.
They include possession of a weapon on educational property on both the UNC-G campus and the campus of North Carolina A&T University; possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; maintaining a dwelling for the sale and delivery of a controlled substance; possession of marijuana, and three counts of possession of stolen goods.
Lowe did not spend the night in jail, though it took more than five hours and 14 bail bondsmen to come up with the required portion of the $450,000 secured bond to get him out. The elder Lowe was in Greensboro with his son at the magistrate's office.
"His father has been with him every second of the way and is absolutely standing by his son, as any father would," Clifford said.
According to a statement from N.C. State Athletic Director Lee Fowler, "We understand what a difficult time this must be for the Lowe family. I have spoken with Sidney and assured him that we support our coach and will do what we can for him and his family as they deal with this situation."
The younger Lowe is a student at N.C. A&T in Greensboro. According to N.C. State's athletic department Web site, he is one of Sidney Lowe's three children.
Police said UNC-G freshman Stephen Cobb was shot in the lower back during an attempted robbery. Brian Patrick Martin, 19, was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with attempted first-degree robbery and related weapons charges. Another person was also charged in connection with the incident.
During the incident on March 16, police said, Lowe and Martin were armed with an assault weapon during the home invasion at 1322 West Friendly Ave. in Greensboro, where cellular phones, cash, laptop computers and other property were taken.
Lowe's first court date is scheduled for April 30. Coach Lowe could not be reached for comment, a school spokeswoman said.
