Head Coach Butch Davis Undergoing Chemotherapy
March 20, 2007CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ----- As a result of a recent routine dental examination with his Cleveland dentist, Dr. David Koski, North Carolina head coach Butch Davis had a small growth removed from his gum, which pathology tests revealed to be non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
This led to several immediate in-depth medical tests at the Cleveland Clinic, where Davis has undergone an executive physical every year since 2001. These tests revealed no evidence of cancer in any other area of his body.
After receiving several medical opinions, Davis has chosen to undergo chemotherapy at the advice of his doctors.
"Like most people faced with cancer, the diagnosis came as a complete shock," said Davis. "However, the doctors have been thorough and have recommended a course of chemotherapy. As a result of all of the other tests, my general health has never been better.
"Our doctors felt it best to take every reasonable precautionary measure to insure my continued good health. My family, my health and coaching this football team are my top priorities. I would appreciate and expect the focus to remain on the North Carolina football team and our preparations for the 2007 season."
Davis underwent his first chemotherapy during UNC's Spring Break on March 16 in Cleveland under the care of Dr. Brad Pohlman, Director of Lymphoma at the Cleveland Clinic, Taussig Cancer Center. Davis will continue chemotherapy at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill under the medical care of Dr. Thomas Shea, UNC Professor of Medicine in the division of hematology and oncology.
