Just finished it, and I liked it a lot. Very good profile on the sport, and on Borschel and LeClere. I thought Kreidler over dramatized a things here and there, but overall it wasn't that bad.
The one thing I thought was a little ridiculous was in the chapter where he was talking about how Z didn't really recruit Borschel, LeClere, Slaton and whoever else instead choosing to bring in "imports." Kreidler didn't mention that these imports by the names of Mark Perry, Charlie Falck, and Alex Tsirtsis were pretty highly regarded themselves. I know the book was written to profile, and to an extent glorify the Iowa guys, but this just kind of stuck out to me.
Overall I'd give it a solid B+. A very good book as I said, but I liked "A Season on the Mat" better.

Thanks for the review, Shane. I wish I had purchased a copy at the National Duals. Talked to the author a bit -- really nice guy, seemed to have become a fan of the sport in writing about it and these athletes.

I should be done in a few days. I'll send it out to anyone who wants it, as long as they guarantee that they will send it on to someone else if asked. Lemme know.
Yes, it takes me forever to read books, because I have a two year old and a 7 month old here at home. I miss reading, almost as much as I miss sleeping.

Someone wrote a book years ago (like 20 to 30 years ago) that was similar to JFK's "Profiles in Courage", in that each chapter profiled a different person. The chapter on Gable was amazing, if I remember correctly. It detailed the insane workouts he endured, and was one of the most inspiring things I've ever read. Does anyone remember the name of the book? I'd like to at least track down that chapter somehow.

Flop, I could be completely crazy, but that sounds like "Gifford on Courage" by Frank Gifford, Kathie Lee's husband. (I know he was famous on his own before her. ;-) The book would be about the vintage you described, and, if I remembered correctly, each chapter was about one individual. I know that Gable was in Gifford's book, and that Gifford thought the world of Dan and the sport of wrestling. (Gifford was part of the ABC Wide World of Sports broadcast team when the NCAAs were broadcast on an edited, tape-delay basis on that show. In fact, if I remember right, he was part of the 1970 NCAAs broadcast, featuring the biggest upset in college wrestling, Owings beating Gable in the 142 finals.) I think the book you're talking about may be "Toughest Men In Sports: Looking For The Mental Edge" by Mike Chapman. Flop, I remember a book very similar to that by Frank Deford. It had a whole bunch of chapters on athlete's success and there was a great chapter on Gable

I think it may have been "Gifford on Courage". I'll have to track it down to verify. The other books sound interesting also, I'll check them out as well.
Thanks for all of the input, I knew that I'd have luck asking a question like that on this board.

I have Mike Chapman's book, and you'd probably like it, too. He profiles athletes in "combat" sports -- not just wrestling, but boxing and MMA as well. Each guy gets about 10 pages and a couple pics. Among the tough guys besides Gable: Hodge, Dempsey, Tunney, Marciano, Ali, Bruce Lee, Wayne Baughman, and Frank Gotch.
