Now we are all going to be Mexican. I love these cultural holidays. They give us another day of heavy drinking and the chance to celebrate a culture and holiday of which we have no idea about either. Viva la Cinco de mayo.

I occasionally go to Mexico for work. Once when the local Mexicans were talking about their national independence day holiday that was coming up which I believe was in March. I mentioned that I thought that Cinco de Mayo was there national holiday. Most of them had never heard of it. Only one knew of it and had to explain the history behind it to the others.

It is only big in America and maybe only in the SW states. To me it is realy just a day for the folks of Mexican decent to celebrate their country and culture and for me and my buddies to wear a sombrerro while drinking cheap tequila.

We may all be Irish on St Patty's day, but as my uncle Tony is always quick to point out...Saint Patrick was technically Italian, as was St. Valentine and of course Christopher Columbus.

Mexican Independence Day is September 16th. celebrating thier independence from Spain in 1810.
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated because 4,000 Mexican soldiers and Indians defeated the French Army, led by Maximilian, of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on May 5, 1862.

Viva la Cinco de mayo. I celebrate both pretty well...Chapman, Ks where I'm from is home of the Irish and has a huge parade (whole town of 1200 shows up) and tons of money is raised for stuff. Even the Army Infantry Band did a concert this year! Cinco de Mayo 2007 will mark 2 years to the day that I've been in remission...I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do for it, I know a theme park is opening in Kansas, but I may save my money and fly somewhere in the fall for a football game or something.
