The Board is meeting this Friday to make decisions on budget cuts to the athletic programs. RU is facing a $66M cut in state funding from 05/06 and they have been slashing academic programs. The state just capped the tuition increase at 8% so there will be a stretch for athletics to meet the target department budget.
Rutgers is committed to the Big East and we well know the conference lacks wrestling. The football program is running a deficit even though they made $1.25M from a bowl last year, consuming it and another $25K on expenses to bring nearly 450 people including family to the game.
Several low profile sports have been tentatively identified including: fencing; crew; field hockey; cross country, and ****wrestling***.
All but wrestling have both men's and women's teams.
The writing is on the wall - no conference competition, dedicated to men only, nearly no income production, head coach on the verge of retirement, little fan support.
They may nail all five sports - but you gotta believe wrestling will be the last to be saved.

Keep us updated, I agree the writing don't look good for wrestling.

This sucks.
I should just start selling "Save ____ Wrestling" website templates. It seems like there is a market for them nowadays.
So what can be done to prevent the cut from happening?

Hopefully they won't cut any sports and tighten the budgets on all sports to save the money.

Rutgers Football got to a bowl game (hell froze over) and now they have these delusions of grandeur about winning and competing.
A solid recruiting class with a horde of NFJ kids along with Jake Percival as an assistant could have RU trying to escape the bottom tier of the EIWA.
