I suppose most of us have a fear of being falsely accused of anything.
This is what happened to me, I GUESS (since I didn't really understand the offered explanation), over on the "other board".
After sending a (very polite) e-mail requesting an explanation for my banning, I received this explanation in reply:
"Steve, In an effort to clean up the boards of the trash talk under alias names that has been going on lately, several alias usernames and their IP addresses have been banned from the forums. In crossreferencing IP addresses with usernames, it would appear that your IP was banned along with the username "GopherPhan_" I am removing the ban on the IP address as it appears to be a aol/compuserv assigned ip address. The username "GopherPhan_", however will remain banned. I apologize for the inconvenience."
The author of this return e-mail was Mike Wilson. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone understand this explanation? I didn't. Does AOL assign different ips everytime someone logs on?
All I know is that I never created an "alias" (why would anyone?) and resented the accusation that I did. I have no idea what I have to do with the gopherfan charachter. Was that person somehow able to use my IP? Why did the "cross reference" fail the moderators?
No big deal in the grand scheme of things, except for the fact that I can imagine situations where a mistaken identity on the internet can have much graver consequences in other contexts.

Hi, Steve, I don't understand the explanation, but it was probably sent by Webmaster Meredith Wilson. Lower right: themat.com/contact.php

Steve, yes some users assign ip's, although it is my understanding that there will be certain identifiers in the ip. Of course for someone that don't have a ton of time, it can become time consuming to track down an ip.
In the past, at the old house I had a alias, it was for fun, the name was Fawn Hall or something like that, named after Oliver North's secretary that did some shredding. They can be fun, and I appreciate JensenS having the comment here that he does in the rules about alias's. I suspect that several here use them. I know that Chris Alan Hammer used to have a couple and we would play back and forth, among others like a famous 5 words poster.
Unfortunately, it appears that AOL used a ip that was assigned. I visit the Okwrestle.com board on ocassion, and they run into this problem all of the time. I still like the idea of showing the ip because it can be used to help identify trolls and so forth.

That sounds like the same "explanation" given to ideamark when he was banned. He has AOL and I remember he was told that he was inadvertently banned when GopherPhan was banned due to ISP issues.
Sounds lame to me....if they can end with banning just the user name, why couldn't they begin with that? What they did was like killing a fly with a handgrenade.....lots of collateral damage and sometimes the fly gets away.

Its funny how they want to "clean up" the boards and ban respected posters.
One of Craig Sesker's things he said to me was that people were calling eachother "douche bags" and such. If you go to the search feature on there, there are still many instances where that exact phrase is still used, but not cleaned up.
The admin there are as bored with the off-season as we are, so they are maiming the boards to fill their time.

Yea, that's sounds about the size of it, PDurant.
Spider. How did Meredith Wilson turn into Mike Wilson? (trick question).

What has pissed me off, and I am a moderator, is that they will ban for things like that, but let someone make an accusation against a kid that isn't true and they let that go. I don't have an issue with stating things that are public record, DUI, etc, but I am especially sensitive to the negativity that goes out towards kids, and/or adults for that matter if not founded and supported. To be a jerk just for the sake of being a jerk is allowed. It is a shame that language is of more a priority than the reputation of young men.
Point in case. The thread about Riley Adamson. Riley is a great kid and I won't go into much detail other than to say, chunked who was there in the past tried to start crap between me and him and was saying things untrue. The sad thing is I suspect I know who chunked is, if he ever wants to email me at mike@furches.org under an assumed name I'll tell him. Bottom line though, and on some things he is right, some started making comments about Riley and bringing up his personal family history. I know for a fact that Riley was upset about that. I have communicated with him, and additional family members that thanked me for my comments, yet, those posts, which defamed this young man are still up. Don't talk to me about ethics if not willing to be ethical about the one thing that matters the most, the people behind the negative comments.
There that will be my soap box for the day but somebody has to say it.

GopherPhan, I mean Steve, how could you deceive us all this time? Perhaps, you have created many more aliases in the past that we don't know about. Were you cradle as well? Ah nevermind, I don't even want to know......................

Spider. How did Meredith Wilson turn into Mike Wilson? (trick question). By changing the spelling. Just a guess, but maybe she thought you'd sooner accept an explanation from a guy - or maybe I'm just wrong.

Be truthful now. I'll still respect you in the morning.

Perhaps I just assumed that an exalted (borrowing Jensen's word) webmaster would have to be a guy. I should have known that a GIRL was behind all of this (hee, hee, hee).

You can't even see it? That's crazy (AND UNAMERICAN!!!).
You could access from a different computer (library for instance) if you felt inclined, I suppose.
