I've noticed - at least on my monitor - that there is no color change to indicate which threads I have read and which remain unopened. Do I need to change a setting or is that how the forum is currently set up?

Thats how the forum is set up, there should be a "new" next to the threads that have new posts in them since the last time you read them.

But that doesn't really solve the problem. I haven't read the majority of threads here....and can't keep track of the ones I've opened cause there's no color change. I'm sure there are dozens of threads the have "new" posts and dozens of threads that don't....that I haven't read. No way to tell.
Is there a way to set up the forum so a poster can choose to be notified when someone responds to a thread of particular interest? Our local wrestling forum has that feature which I find very useful.

The "New" means there is a new post on the thread. The "New" goes away after you have opened the thread. If another post is added since you last opened the thread the "New" returns.

Peggy - I don't think there's an email notification, but you can "bookmark" a thread - when you are posting a reply, there's a checkbox at the bottom for this. Then in your profile, you can view the threads you have bookmarked.

Peg, at the top of the page in the bkue line you'll find "Mark Thread as Read". Now I don't know how I did it, but I mark 2 threads as read. When I tried to do it intentionally, it doesn't work.
Somehow it does work, it puts up a hand and flashlight like icon all the way to the right of the thread title where the yellow folder is. I just figure out how I did it accidently.
