The Ultimate Fighter season one veterans and current top welterweight contenders Josh Koscheck (10-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and Diego Sanchez (17-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) are tentatively scheduled to square off in April at UFC 69, according to Wrestling Observer and MMAWeekly.com.
UFC 69, scheduled for April 7 in Houston, will be the first-ever UFC event in Texas.
Koscheck and Sanchez actually first fought (in an exhibition bout) on the first season of the reality show. Both fighters won their preliminary matches (Koscheck over Chris Leben and Sanchez over Alex Karalexis and later Josh Rafferty). In the season's 11th episode, the two fighters took part in an exciting three-round quarterfinal bout, with Sanchez winning a close split decision. Sanchez went on to beat Kenny Florian in the show's finale to win the season's middleweight (185-pound) title.
Since the show, both fighters have dropped to the welterweight (170-pound) division. Koscheck has won six of his seven UFC fights since then, losing only to Drew Fickett in the final minute of a UFC Fight Night 2 bout. Koscheck had dominated the fight up until then but was caught with a knee to the head and a subsequent rear naked choke.
Sanchez has been undefeated in UFC action, scoring major wins over UFC notables such as Nick Diaz, Karo Parisyan and Joe Riggs. He's widely considered the top contender in the UFC's welterweight division, which currently boasts Georges St. Pierre as its champion.
This bout would surely have major implications on the division and could earn the winner an immediate title shot.
Here's the latest rumored UFC 69 card (based on a variety of sources):
Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra
Diego Sanchez vs. Josh Koscheck
Joe Stevenson vs. Caol Uno
Luke Cummo vs. Josh Haynes
