WOW What a fight! BJ Penn had worked over Matt Hughes in the first two rounds and won them handily! It looked like we were in for a big upset. Penn then gassed and Hughes brutally pounded him into the mat in round three and Big John McCarthy jumped in and saved Penn's life! Penn is a very skilled fighter with incredible takedown defense. Hughes could not take Penn down in the first two rounds no matter how hard he tried! Penn is also freakishly flexible and is amazing on the ground and throw in some excellent striking skills and you almost have an unbeatable fighter. The one thing about Penn is he is always in horrible condition and runs out of gas constantly! Hughes once again proved how tough he is by hanging in there and using his great conditioning and strenght to once again defend his undisputed Welterweight Championship Belt! Great Job Matt!

Penn's flexibility and balance are exceptional.
If he every gets in shape, he could be unstoppable.

Ground why are you starting another Hughes thread when I had written this one? We must have been typing at the same time. I was able to delete it.

Penn is so talented it's amazing! He basically was shutting Hughes down until he ran out of steam! The kid needs a great trainer and he will be hell to deal with!

Penn's triangle/ arm bar looked tight. If there were more time left in the round, Hughes may have tapped.

Penn is a tremendous talent who lacks a fighters heart. If he doesn't overpower you with skill early on he'll gas and lose. If he wants to fight at a high level he must train for conditioning. Too bad Hughes didn't keep it on the feet longer, beat him up worse, then take him down, he might of subbed him. And the thumb was intentional.

He just might have. Matt said the arm bar was the real problem for him. It seems Penn has no problem getting Hughes back. He has done it easily in both fights. I tell you I want to see these guy's do it for the third time and tiebreaker match! I just want to see Penn in great cadio shape for once. This would be the fight of the year!

I'd like to see a third fight.
I'm not convinced that Hughes is better than Penn.

I'd like to see a rubber match myself. Penn is a very talented fighter, great ground skills and real good stand up for MMA. I don't know how much he wants it though. He comes from money, so that's not a motivation. He's also probably a great athlete who picked things up easily, I don't see where he would have developed the will to strive. Also, the announcers kept saying he took the fight "on short notice" since when was 6 weeks short notice?

I think Penn needs to have someone close to him get in his face and tell him he needs to become the total package. That without him letting a conditioning pro train him he will never get the respect he deserves! He will never reach his tremendous potential that he was born with! He is a spoiled kid that does come from money and he probably excelled in the fight game from the start. He probably never had to dig deep down and see what he is really made of. I hope he finds out!

BJ weighed in for the fight at 166 pounds. He should cut down to 155 and dominate that division again. But I doubt we'll see the dedication from him again.

Did anybody else think Hughes controlled the second round until the triangle/armbar. Penn won the first hands downbut I thought Hughes was in control in the second and would have won it fi not for the armbar. Bj was totaly spent in the third and had no chance after that even if he woudlnt have been TKO'd.

I agree with your thoughts on the second round, and while I thought Penn won the first round, I don't think it was hands down. They were both landing clean shots. One not controlling the Octagon more than the other. I think it came down to being impressed with his takedown defense.

Did you guys read the post match interview were Penn said he pulled/injured his ribs at the end of the second round?
He claims he didn't gas. Rather, he couldn't take a deep breath or twist at the waist because of the injury. Who knows??
