Our team used to use Kenshield for protection from catching skin infections, but we switched to Ninety-nine, which actually kills bacteria instead of just shielding the skin from them. Ninety-nine is no longer available, so what do any of you recommend as a pre-match or pre-practice skin protection product? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

This may sound crazy, but we started doing this 2 years ago and have since had no problems at all, btw have used both products you mention. The "home remedy" that has worked for the team w/no ringworm is to bathe with Head & Shoulders Shampoo after each practice. The wrestlers use it as a body wash and for at least the last 2 years to my knowledge, have not had a single instance of RW.

99 dropped off the market when Kenshield took them to court for making unsubstantiated claims (and, apparently, untrue) as to its effectiveness. We have used Kenshield with very good success. The kids we have had come up with problems didn't use it - or were exposed elsewhere. I do recommend that, when ringworm shows up, that the kids wash the affected area with selsen blue (I would suppose other medicated shampoos would work, but that is the one that Lehigh University used in their study on ringworm) prior to the application of Lamasil. The shampoo cleans the area, removing the skin oils, etc. that might come between the medication and the fungi. This seems to greatly improve the rate of reduction of the infection.
