Second chances are hard to come by in the sport of wrestling where one mistake can end a match quickly. At the Southern Regional Qualifier in Tulsa, Oklahoma youth wrestlers crowded around the raised mat to watch wrestlers grab a shot at being a part of Season 2 for Real Pro Wrestling. Five of the seven champions utilized their second shot after failing to capture the title at the first regional they attended.
Vougar Oroudjov, a two time World Champion from Azerbaijan, suffered a stunning defeat at the Eastern Regional in Philadelphia, but determined to make a pro team, Oroudjov defeated Michael Santos for the title. At 132 pounds and 211 pounds Teyon Ware and Ryan Cummins were unopposed.
The 145 pound weight class featured a classic battle of collegiate stars Matt Murray against Dylan Long. In the best of three series Murray grabbed the first match while Long battled back to tie the series in the second match. During the third match, Murray still smarting from a rib tear, fell deeply behind Long. Murray nearly pulled off the come from behind victory stepping in for a crowd pleasing four point lateral. In the end Long defeated Murray 15-7 to advance to San Jose.
In a four man round robin David Bolyard, formerly of Central Michigan, went undefeated for the day taking the title. Bolyard’s toughest match was against Jacob Klein a two-time All-American from Nebraska. Bolyard used two turns and a four point feet to back takedown to take an eight to four victory, advancing him into the Super Challenge event.
Ben Wissel, like Dylan Long, failed to grab the title at the Northern Regional Qualifier in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Wissel made the trip to Tulsa and left with the title in the four man round robin bracket at 163 pounds.
Finally, Carlos Dolmo of the Bronx New York grabbed the heavyweight trip to San Jose by gaining two wins against the stout competition of Pavel Bittner. Bittner a mammoth opposing 6’ 4” figure from the Czech Republic was stymied by Dolmo’s leg attacks losing two matches to none.
Real Pro Wrestling’s Season 2 schedule advances to San Jose where regional champions face off against Season 1 wrestle-back competitors. Wrestlers from Season 1 are signing contracts and the final list of competitors will be released in early December.
