Rumors are flying that Joe Williams, the greatest wrestler in Illinois history, will coach Rockford Boylan this year.
Assistant principal Jerry Kerrigan spoke with Williams, but said all talks were strictly preliminary and informal. Kerrigan also said he gets frequent phone calls about the topic. He tells callers that, no, Williams hasn’t been hired as the Titans’ coach, and, no, transfers aren’t flocking to Boylan to be coached by Williams. The rumor this week was that Boylan would sign Williams today. A Titan wrestler even asked Kerrigan if he could attend the signing.
“The stories I get run the gamut,” Kerrigan said. “We’ve made no decision. Except for the day this summer he came up to visit, there have been no interviews, no application, nothing.”
Kerrigan said Williams, an assistant coach at college powers Iowa and Iowa State in recent years, wanted to move back closer to Chicago and possibly start a wrestling club, and that Williams regarded Rockford as a good market for a private wrestling club.
Williams, 31, was 171-1 and won four Class AA state titles at Chicago Mount Carmel. His only loss was a disqualification for a slam in a match he was winning handily at the time. He was a three-time NCAA champ at Iowa with a career record of 129-9. He’s a five-time national freestyle champ and placed fifth in the 2004 Olympics at 162.8 pounds.
Williams also has baggage. He resigned as an Iowa assistant coach after being charged with criminal indecent exposure by the girlfriend of then-Iowa wrestler Jason D’Agata during a Nov. 14, 2003 incident. Williams was acquitted earlier this month. Williams did not testify, but his lawyers claimed he inadvertently exposed himself while Melissa Greazel gave him a massage in her boyfriend’s apartment when D’Agata wasn’t there. D’Agata and Greazel have filed a $1 million civil suit.
Boylan’s head wrestling coaching position remains open. Kerrigan confirmed Rick Schmitz, the Titans coach for the last six years, won’t be back.
