IOWA CITY, IA - District Associate Judge Stephen Gerard II told jurors they must continue deliberating the fate of former University of Iowa wrestling coach Joe Williams.
Gerard called the jury back into the Johnson County District Court room just before 11:30 a.m. after the jury leader sent a note indicating the jury was hung and unable to reach a unanimous decision.
"This is a case that has been exhaustedly and carefully tried by both sides," Gerard told the eight man and four woman jury as he instructed them to continue their deliberations.
The jury deliberated for abou 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon and resumed deliberations at 9 a.m. this morning. Gerard said jurors had not deliberated long enough to declare a mistrial.
Williams, 31, a member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, faces up to a year in jail, a $1,500 fine and 10 years of registering as a sex offender. He was accused of exposing himself to Melissa Greazel, the girlfriend of former UI wrestler Jason D'Agata, in 2003.
Assistant Johnson County Attorney Anne Lahey argued that Williams exposed himself while visiting with Greazel because he hoped to have a sexual encounter with her.
Defense lawyers Brandon Brown and Matt Boles claimed Williams was the victim of accusations from D'Agata, who with his girlfriend, tried to use the incident to get him into the starting line-up for a shot at a national championship and so that he could collect settlements from Williams and the UI. The defense argued Williams accidentally exposed himself while rolling over during a consensual massage with Greazel.
