For those of you who dig Spider's new avatar of the only Sports Illustrated cover ever to feature amateur wrestling... ... or if you're a fan of the man on the April 1, 1957 cover, Daniel Allen Hodge... ... I invite you to check out the Yahoo group dedicated to one of the all-time greats in amateur wrestling, Fans of Dan Hodge. You'll find photos of Hodge in high school... as an Oklahoma Sooner... and as an Olympic wrestler. Plus you'll find pics of him as a boxer... a pro rassler... and off the mat, along with articles, NCAA brackets, and more, more, more. And you'll find an actual-size photo of Hodge's SI cover... along with the article itself for you to read. Here's the link: sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Fans_of_Dan_Hodge/Check it out! Mark

Dear Mike,
Thanks for sharing all the great photos of Dan the Man.
I have only talked to Dan Hodge twice in my life, and both times were a distinct pleasure. A true gentleman. The first time was at Mike Chapman's "store" at Union Station in St Louis. Mike introduced me to Hodge (I've corresponded with Mike RE Frank Gotch) and Hodge was amazed that someone my age (47) knew who he was! He genuinely seemed to be taken aback. To my way of thinking, every wrestler and wrestling fan should know about Dan Hodge... and, ideally, have the pleasure of KNOWING Dan Hodge.
Mark

I have seen him take hours to spend with kids, and talk to them and teach them. Often times he is the one you have to drag away. In a world where sports stars have forgotten what it means to be a hero, it is nice to have a few legitimate heroes left like Dan Hodge. The closest anyone ever came to being like that whom I met was Warren Spahn. Now Dan Hodge, and Warren Spahn, those were/are men!

It's a bygone era when the word superstars didn't exist, but heroes did.
