The 145 final ended 3-2 in OT after one wrestler was called for stalling a during the 30 second ride out. Actually, it was the second stalling point against Lanno, having been hit for apoint in the final secs of the 3rd period. Here's a photo of the call. The stall call on Lanno in overtime is spelled out specifically in the National Federation of High Schools wrestling rule book. In subsection (c), it refers to stalling when "the defensive wrestler stands and the offensive wrestler locks hands onto a single leg or around the waist in a hold, either by standing or lifting, the defensive wrestler off the mat, and/or walks around." Lanno had Menditto by the lower leg and lifted it into the air. Now, in all fairness teh split second of a pic is not normally a fair means of deciding, but their it is. Holding the leg, but making no attempt for bring the opponent to the mat. Here is a video clip that includes both stall calls: www.nj.com/hssports/wrestling/ledger/video/index.ssf/145final?vidclip=/njo/starledger/video/wrestling/145final/145finals.flvIf the vid doesn't come up use the scroll bar to the right and go to 145 Lb. (By the way there is a lead in ad for The Edge wrestling center where many of the top NJ boy train outside practice and in the off season.)

I saw that match too and thought the fact that the ref did not allow any time, not even a split second, for Lanno to do anything was unfair. As soon as the wrestlers stood up, the ref called stalling and gave the 1 point. You must have caught that photo in that millisecond.
Should not Lanno have had 5 seconds to return Menditto to the mat? Isn't that how similar situations in regulation are generally called? Are the rules different in the 30 second over-time periods?
The fact that Lanno was given no time to react angered a lot of people who had no dog in the fight. There were boos all around my section of the arena on that call.

The first stall was at :06, the 2nd at :03. This ref had high expectations for the final 10 sec's at the end of the bout.

Horrible call, but he still should have handled himself a lot better.
