Columbus -- The much-anticipated Division III heavyweight wrestling championship match between Black River's Jesse Campbell and St. Peter Chanel's Cameron Wade ended in controversy and hard feelings Saturday night.
Campbell was awarded the championship on a stalling call on Wade in overtime. After the call, Wade swore at the official, gave an obscene gesture and stormed off the mat as boos reigned down from the Value City Arena crowd.
Wade was disqualified for flagrant misconduct. He was escorted off the awards platform and informed his place had been stripped, as were the team points he had scored throughout the tournament.
"This is unbelievable," Campbell said, after planting a kiss on the cheek of coach Corey Kline. "Oh my God, this is unexplainable. Nothing compares to this."
It was a rematch of last season's state championship, when Wade, a Penn State recruit, won, 5-3. Wade was seeking his third state title. He took a 46-0 record into the finals. Wade led, 1-0, in the third period, but a first stalling point, with 48 seconds left, sent the match into overtime.
Chanel coach Graham Coghill said the stalling call in overtime was the proper call, but the match never should have gotten to that point.
"I didn't agree with the first [stalling] warning [in the second period]," Coghill said. "Our kid had just finished trying to turn him, he almost had back points. What did they want the guy to do? Our kid was upset. I don't condone what happened. He lost control. I just thought it was poor refereeing, period."
