Last years 7th grade wunderkind, Destin McCauley won his first state title last season at 103 lbs with Apple Valley and instantly began talk of the first wrestler to ever win six state titles in Minnesota wrestling history. Today, Mr. McCauley advanced to the finals again via two first period falls and a 13-0 match. Suffice it to say that six state titles does not seem so far off now if he gets his second under his belt as an eighth grader. He is also going for his second team title on Sunday which could also bring up some interesting statistics as Apple Valley has dominated AAA team wrestling in Minnesota during the 90's and the 2000's. Has anyone ever won six individual titles and six team titles. I would have to lean towards a "no" on this.
Now, today, a second 7th grader from Apple Valley, Eric Devos has also landed in the finals of the state tournament at the 103 pound weight class that Destin McCauley vacated this year in favor of the 112 lb weight class. I had never heard of a 7th grader winning a state title in the large school wrestling tournament and now it may happen at the same school in back to back seasons. Stay tuned!

Good thing they weren't on the team when we wrestled them. I probably would have gotten spanked! We wrestled them two years, and I think we only won 4 matches against them in those two years.

Oh nowhere near that long ago.
I went to Don Bosco, one year behind Mack. I know the younger Fessler gave him a hell of a match his (Mack's) senior year. What happened to him and his bro Michael (I think he gave LeClere his last folkstyle loss in HS on the same day)?

those fesslers were great on there feet and could match takedowns with anyone in the country, i am not sure they were too good at finishing and i think they were both pretty light...i am not sure where either of them went but i know it wasn't D1...

Both are no longer wrestling. Another brother dropped off the team this year and has given up the sport rumor has it. I think there is one more Fessler coming up, but I am not positive about that.

Ya know, 7th graders winning a state title....you question the quality of the talent in the state when that occurs. Now granted, it's no different than a soph beating on seniors and these titles will not likely occur in any weight above 112, you still have to look at the physcial differences between a 7th grader and 9th grader which is a period where most kids are into a growth spurt.

You may want to check with your state champs at Jackson about the quality of wrestling at Apple Valley. Russel, who I believe placed fifth in NJ edged Devos 3-1 at the Clash. AV beat Jackson in the top bracket. I am not saying that MN has better wrestling than NJ, but these two exceptional young wrestlers do not mean that there is no competition in Minnesota. McCauley's only loss this year was to #1 ranked Tony Ramos where he pushed the action for most of the match.

Russell did finish 5th having lost to Knapp- 3rd and Cangina- 1st , both freshman. The top 8 at 103 in NJ were all freshman. McCauley beat Cook, another freshman at 112, but Cook never made it out of his district.

Apple Valley beat the top two teams in NJ this year, No. 1 Jackson and No. 2 South Plainfield at The Clash.

Nothing against these two kids because they are probably amazing wrestlers, but this is how weak 103lbs is becoming with the new weight rules. Kids aren't allowed to cut as much weight, therefore there are less and less upperclassmen at this weight. I think its about time 103lbs goes the way of the 98lb weight class.
