Apple Valley moved from #19 to #8 in the latest highschool rankings after a nice performance at The Clash.
They finished second to #6 Lombard, IL Montini 33-32 and ahead of #7Glenbard North and #8 Carl Sandberg. Good showing overall. Its nice to see Apple Valley start moving out of there borders to wrestle some big time programs. Until lately they could only hold the title of best highschool program in Minnesota but it appears that they have learned that if they want to get some national attention, they need to go out and get it.
I think that #13 Brandon High School Brandon, FL needs to do the same thing with their highschool folkstyle team instead of trying to prove it through their freestyle teams in the spring and summer.

You are forgetting their number 2 national ranking the year, 1999-2000, they came into the St. Eds gym for a dual. That was a great team, much more than just "best in Minnesota".

How did they fare in that dual...
you are right though...a couple of times in there past they have moved inside the Top Five but often times they wallow around 10-20...

How did they fare in that dual... you are right though...a couple of times in there past they have moved inside the Top Five but often times they wallow around 10-20... Apple Valley took 5 matches but there was come controversy. Earlier in the day, they had dominated Walsh Jesuit and not missing a beat came out roaring against St. Eds.. A key bout early was Matt Shankey beating Mason Lenhard. Then in a bout that AV appeared to be winning, it controversially went into OT, where the EDs wrestler got a pin. That was a 9 point swing and really seemed to take the wind out of AV's sails. That there was controversy was a REAL shame because it marred a wonderful dual meet. Keep in mind that some would tell you that that was one of EDs all-time best teams. Lang, Moos, Lenhard, Jayne, Bertin, Vondruska, Koz, etc.. 5 went on to win state that year, and I thought I read that AV had more than that at the Minn state championships the end of the year. I actually thought I read that they had 9, but now I question my memory regarding that number.

St. Ed's beat Apple Valley 34-17 that year. Apple Valley had 3 state champions (Mark Buck 112, Matt Shankey 125, and Chad Redmann Hwt).

Only three champs? 9 Finalists maybe? Oh well.
Wasn't Schlottke also on that team?

Schlottke and Lucas Christianson were runner-ups. A.V. had five in the finals.

thats pretty impressive...i can tell you one thing and it is not a shot against apple valley as i wrestled there my freshman and sophomore years in highschool, they have the easiest qualifying region in the state...they put more individuals through to state in that region then anyone else...usually 60-85% of their team qualify for the state tournament...in there defense...that means that alot of them are wrestling not only their individual matches but also in the team tournament...they use their depth alot in the early round matches if they can afford to in order to rest the individuals that they know are going to go deep in to the tournament...

I disagree Gopfer, region 4AAA is by far the weakest region in the state(doesn't matter which class, AAA, AA, or A). Apple Valley just makes region 6 look bad by destroying everyone every year. BTW, I'm NOT an A.V. fan, it just looks that way

Goferphan - I have been following the national scene for about nine years now, and as far as I can tell, Apple Valley has gotten a huge amount of respect nationally. I can't think of anybody I know out west, who knows anything about national level HS wrestling, that doesn't know who Apple Valley is. I guess I don't get the premise of your thread?

I believe what he might have meant was they were rated to low(19), and only by beating higher rated teams were they able to get the respect they deserve when that respect should have been there in the first place???

geez sgallan, i guess i didn't know we had to have a point to start a thread...i was under the impression that we were free to post anything that we wanted on here that also inspired people to give their opinions...
if it was the case that we had to have a point to post then BIG better give back about 1600 of his 3100 posts...
