Let's face it, that was a tough situation for Smith. Marky Mark just blew away his 2 timer. Professionally he can't show much enjoyment. From a personal perspective, I would imagine things were a little celebratory outside of the crowd.
Let's put it in reverse perspective. Imagine the finger pointing if Smith displayed the typical excitement kin would ordinarily express. Okie folks would have been all over his cauliflowers. It's not like it was his son that won. Could he have acted a little differently without criticism, maybe. I have no bones with Mr. Smith.

As a non-Iowa or OSU fan, but as an aunt, I think John Smith did the right thing. He had to be there for his wrestler in public, but in private, he congratulated his nephew. As close as I am to my niece and nephew, I could not imagine being in Smith's position.

i wrestled my coaches son one night in the big "cross-town" rivalry...my coach sat in the stands during the match and our assistant coach took over...i had no issue with it
(i got lucky as hell and caught him in a cow-catcher for a fall)
