Warning!! This thread has the potential to dredge up the longest held debate in wrestling history, but I found the scenario quite ironic.
As I am sure many of you know, Steve Alford left U of Iowa to coach basketball at New Mexico. The story was reported today that he told one of the High School recruits (kid from Indiana) he signed that he can come with him to New Mexico. This is a potential occurance of tampering by Alford and grounds for discipline.
The Iowa AD was quoted the he would review the incident and make the appropriate decision. He indicated that they would require the recruit to follow-through on his commitment to U of Iowa even though the coach that signed him is gone.
Sound somewhat familiar to anyone???

Different situations.
It sounds like the basketball recruit signed a NLI, which binds him to Iowa for one year. He's free to go to another Div I school, but he would have to sit out the year. There is no option to release an athlete in basketball, they have to sit out a year when they transfer.
The VT/Iowa wrestling situation was a bit different. The wrestlers had already spent a year at VT so met the requirements of the NLI. Since they chose to leave after that year, in wrestling there is the option for the losing school to release the athletes. VT did not do that.

hmmm....doesn't really seem to strike any bells.... Let me see if I can explain it. See Russ Hellickson decided to retire from Ohio State. Well, Iowa was worried that Brands would take the OSU job, so the fired Zalesky with a year on his contract. Iowa State was afraid of another Gable-like situation, so they forced Bobby Douglas out to elevate Cael Sanderson. By the way, when Cael took over he hired his brother as assistant, which opened up the Utah Valley State job. But I digress. Anyway, Brands leaves VT for Iowa, Ryan leaves Hofstra for OSU, Zalesky takes over at another OSU, Dresser is hired at VT, Lenny Bersnstein steps down at UVA.......... Now, in women's lacrosse, Cindy Timchal surprised everyone by leaving Maryland to start the new program at Navy. Schools suddenly renegotiated their coaches contracts to keep them at Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, and Duke. Cathy and Jen were hired from Denver to return to coach at their alma mater Maryland. The coach at Boston U. had quit to follow her husband to his job in Denver and was there to assume the job at UD,...... Whew, my brain hurts, I'll try this later......

you left out Shifflet leaving UNC-G for Hofstra which was a significant impact (IMO) on NC high school wrestling. Come on Terp, get it right, don't be leaving out the important details
