How would you rank the NCAA wrestlers that have wrestled so far this millenium? Obviously you have to put Cael first, but how do you go after that? Guys like Konrad, Askren, Abas, Jones, Thompson, etc all have to fit in the picture...

Awwww, come on, nobody is brave enough to stick their neck out and rank the wrestlers we've seen so far this millenium? On the other forum, some people are asking whether Askren is one of the best ever. I'm just trying to figure out how he fits into wrestlers of today before I can say anything about his spot in the top college wrestlers of all time...

Are you talking about a ranking based strictly college performance... or other achievements as well? I mean, winning an Olympic medal or becoming a coach certainly looks good on the wrestling resume, but...

This thread had slipped my mind, I saw it last night and was meaning to post on it today, but like I said just forgot.
1. Cael Sanderson: Obvious
2. Stephen Abas: I personally think this one is pretty obvious as well, he was absolutely SICK every year after his freshman season, and he was pretty good that year too.
3. Greg Jones: Looked like a man among boys a lot of the time, not necessarily a guy that was looking to destroy people because he just didn't have to. Had he moved up to 184 a year earlier a Jones v. Rosholt final would have been REAL interesting. Ten takedowns given up in four years really speaks for itself.
4. Eric Juergens: Never really saw him a ton, but three titles are three titles.
5. Jake Rosholt: This is a guy I did see. Wasn't favored any of the years that he won, but he always came to the party, and always peaked at the right time.
6. Ben Askren: The best of the two timers. I've posted the numbers here before, and I'll post them again. 153-8, 91 pins. That is absolutely ridiculous.
7. Cole Konrad: Utterly dominant. I'm well aware that the weight was VERY weak this year, and was weak last year after the top four. However, no one was feared more than this guy, and no one was more clutch. Gave up one takedown I believe over his last two years.
8. Steve Mocco: Another guy with whom the numbers really speak for themselves. Undefeated for two years, with a smattering of losses as a freshman, and then the three to Konrad as a senior. Was SCARY as a sophomore, but then got domesticated when he went out to Oklahoma State.
9. Chris Pendleton: Once again, numbers in more ways than one. Extremely dominant after his freshman year with the well known wins over Mr. Askren. Only reason I have him this low is the fact that he only AA'd 3 time, and only made the finals twice.
10. Teyon Ware: Hated on by a lot of people, but unless he was wrestling Nate Gallick, for the majority of his career all he did was win.
Tough list, last two guys I was forced to bump off were Tommy Rowlands, and Travis Lee, however I took a look at many, many more. Basically the most important thing I looked at as you can see, was titles.

I don't care. Troy Letters was one of the best wrestlers i've seen. Finalist against Lackey. Champ against Tyrone Lewis. Lost to Perry to take 3rd before getting seriously injured. Troy is the man.

I'll toss Little Joe Dubuque's singlet into the frey here mainly on the competitiveness of the weight class he was in. 2X champeen, 3 time A-A that missed out his freshman year suffering a concussion before the Big Tens. 114-18 career record, but 57-4 his final two years

If you're gonna mention Cael, you gotta mention his teammate Cradlin' Joe as well.

I took note of all three mentioned, and all three would have been on my list had I gone to 20.

Thanks JensenS. I only get to see these guys wrestle a few times a year, so I dont know enough to make a fair judgement. But I was really surprised to see people on the other board suggesting Askren is one of the best of all time. Sure, he is the best of his time, but we get a new "best of his time" every few years.

Personally I think Askren is on the short list of the best two timers of all time, but to say he's one of the best of ALL time is pretty ridiculous.

If you say Askren.......you must say Pendelton. Maybe. When they wrestled, it was obvious that Pendleton was better, but looking at their respective numbers Askren had by FAR the better career.
