Where do you see Sonny Yohn fitting next year or will he red shirt until Kish is gone. I think weight wise he could make 184 or 197. What do you all think.

I think conventional wisdom would say to redshirt him, and then have him come out running at 184 after Kish graduates assuming he can make the weight. The team is still going to be very, very strong next year so its not like him wrestling would make the difference between a national championship, and second place. However if he doesn't redshirt, I think he would be the guy at 197, never really seen him wrestle, but I assume he'd beat out Malamura and Eidenschink.

i agree that a redshirt may still do him alot of good...someone who knows more about Yohn, please step in here...
i sure hope for line-ups sake that we could field a team that includes glasser at 174, yohn at 184, eidenshink at 197 and nord or berhow at heavyweight in 2008-2009...
next year i still like dretsch, kish, eidenshink at nord/berhow...i say dretsch has a break out year next year at nationals...he knows he can wrestle with anyone at that weight except for askren...
jensens has volunteered to teach him some single leg series takedowns and a blast double so i am confident that he will break out of his averageness...if not, we always have glasser, stitch and kuhlman to push him for his spot...
our lightweights are going to be stellar next year...i don't see another team being able to hang with us up through 157...with c.p. and kish in the line-up in the second five, we are going to be REALLY tough to beat...i just hope it doesn't come down to the heavyweight matches too often...nobody closes like Konrad even though Nord and Berhow will not be pushovers...

I have seen Sonny wrestle a bunch and he has great takedown and can ride well. I agree a red shirt will do him good but if he does I dont think hell be able to make 184, hes going to grow. A year rolling with Kish cant hurt.

It might hurt his wrestling shoe budget though with all those ankle picks coming.

Good thing the Gophers are providing the shoes

Good thing the Gophers are providing the shoes Speaking of that (and slightly hijacking the thread), the U of MN has signed a more restrictive contract with Nike as their primary apparrel and equipment provider. (Getting Tubby Smith on board helps increase national interest in the BB program and hopefully more money into the athletic department.) While I am in favor of it as I imagine it will mean access to high quality warm-ups and possibly more fan merchandise, there is a slight groundswell in MN due to the loyalty (and arguably better quality) of Asics and Adidas shoes. Just thought that was interesting.

Next year for duals: 125-Ness 133-Mack 141-Manny 149-Mongoose 157-Charles P. 165-Saf 174-Glasser 184-Gabe 197-Kish(I think that Glenn is a lot more vunerable than Herbert........hell, Herbert isn't vunerable at all) 285-Nord
May be some shakeups in the upper weights for Big 10 to give best chance of high placers

Kuhman broke his arm pretty badly........so will he come back from that type of injury. And Saf did pretty darn good for himself. I gotta go for Saf as far as performance is concerned.

is kuhlman a senior next year? Itll be interesting to see hoqw 165/174 shape out I gotta think dretsch is the favorite at 174 but with glasser saf and kuhlman all gunning for 165 you never know. Wouldnt that suck making the lineup for 3 years and then getting bumped your senior year by some youngster?

I think that Brandon Sitch is going to end up getting some mat time next year. Throw him into that 165/174 mix too. With Glasser, Saf, Kuhlmann Sitch and Gabe all fighting for two spots, and Kish at 184, Minnesota should score some points in the top five weights to go along with the bottom fabulous five of Ness, Reiter, Rivera, and Schlatter^2

its a good problem to have i guess but i do feel for the wrestlers who spend all that time in the wrestling room over the years and then a younger, tougher wrestler is recruited and the senior wrestlers realizes that he just became the flavor of the week...
as far as dretsch is concerned, he has put himself in this position by not showing any type of growth since his sophomore year...it is completely understandable that he should have to fight for his spot next year with stitch, glasser and kuhlman there to step in if he doesn't show some improvement...
