Did anyone think Askren bowing and blowing kisses to the crowd after his victory was a little weird?

Maybe weird, but totally in character for Askren.

Indeed, its not like Askren has ever been what one would call "normal."

Is it just me, or are we about to say goodbye to two guys who seem to be more at home in the WWE -- Baskren and Johny One N. Things will different without them.

there are always characters to replace them...it is human evolution... Nickerson and Gillespie will replace them just fine. Did you notice those tattoos Gillespie has?

Maybe weird, but totally in character for Askren. I agree with you. I would have been disappointed if he hadn't done something different!

I'm not sure how sincere Ben was with his bows, but I think it was probably the best sendoff that a guy like him could have done. I mean, he did give us four funk-filled years and buckets of falls.
Now we'll have to find someone to carry the "quotable" torch from Ben and Johny.

In terms of memorable quotes, I think Tom Brands is more than up to doing the work of two men -- even potent quotables like Baskren and Johny One N. I think the wrestling press won't suddenly be stuck for "good copy."

Askren was the only guy we, volunteers doing floor operations, let occassionally walk around the arena instead of staying in the stands, or in the "bull pen". He had a smile the whole tourament. He was beaming in this, his last, NCAA's. He didn't abuse it and added a touch of personality to the tournament. Wrestling needs more personalities. We also skirted the mandate by letting C.P. Schlatter stand against the wall after his match so he could watch his brother Dustin in the semi's loss to Gillespie. The NCAA and ESPECIALLY ESPN is tough about camera angles, etc. They wanted as clear a view of the banner behind the center mats as they could get. Likewise for Coca Cola. ABSOLUTELY no visible drink cans or bottles were allowed on the floor besides Powerade and Dasani water.
